A Path to Safety, Healing, and Independence

Leaving an abusive situation does not always mean having a safe place to go. For one woman served by the Anderson County Family Justice Center, whom we’ll call Mary, the journey included six months of living in her car. With ongoing support and connections to community resources, she is now safely housed and doing well.

Her experience reflects why care must extend beyond an immediate crisis.

Since 2021, the Anderson County Family Justice Center has helped people experiencing domestic violence, sexual assault, elder abuse, stalking, and human trafficking. By bringing victim advocacy, civil legal aid, law enforcement, and mental health partners together under one roof, the center helps reduce the barriers people face when seeking help.

In a single, secure setting, clients can receive individualized safety planning, assistance with orders of protection, and support as they work toward safety, healing, and independence. Services are free and confidential.

Support That Continues Beyond the First Visit

During Mary’s time without stable housing, the center provided a safe space, food, and financial assistance through its United Way-funded Two Year Transitional Services Program. Staff also connected her with partner agencies to address her physical, mental, and emotional health needs and help her find housing.

That continued support matters. Finding safety can require time, practical assistance, and people who stay involved as circumstances change.

United Way of Anderson County’s partnership with the center also includes raising awareness of its services, providing education and development opportunities for staff and volunteers, and offering space for larger meetings and events. These resources help strengthen the center’s ability to serve people during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

Looking Ahead: A Safe House for Anderson County

The center’s major goal for 2027 is to make its Anderson County safe house operational. Community members can help through monetary contributions and donations of needed furnishings. A wish list of requested items is planned.

This partnership puts care into action by helping people find support today and build greater stability for tomorrow.
